Researchin' for photo:
Mona Kuhn was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1969. She received a bachelor's degree at Ohio State University and then continued her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Mona Kuhn's black and white photography captures a sort of intimacy with her subject that is similar to the "feel" I wanted in my photographs. The focus is not entirely on the subject, it is only details of that subject, for example: hands, wrinkles, birthmarks, skin texture. This connects to my theme of "fragments", where the bigger picture does not have to be seen in order to have feelings towards it.

Her photos titled Phillip II, Duke, Nikki's Hands, Menta, Zev, and Embrace served as a sort of inspiration my series titled "Intimacy." I had envisioned this sense of closeness between the subjects, which was succesfully captured in the photo although the subjects were strangers. The feel, however, was not captured perfectly due to age and school restrictions. I would have rather had nude subjects as she did. Perhaps in the future I may actually be able to work with nude subjects and recreate this series in a more advanced study of photography.

Her work is described as, "Beneath the mellow surfaces of her photographs lies an explosive energy: the artist's controlled play with the power of sensuality. The subjects and their gestures are suggestive, but ultimately ambiguous," exactly the tone I want my photographs to carry. I feel that this series has finally accomplished this, although in a "PG" rating.
